New Suspended Bed

After being shelved due to a busy year (having a baby and starting a new company took a little time) the new suspended beds are getting close to being almost ready. Derek Young Furniture

Derek Young is a Canadian furniture / prop designer who has recently started selling a line of furniture laminated up from a big stack of CNC cut birch plywood shapes. Nothing too unusual there, but what makes it interesting is the way he has cleverly come up with a product line made up from nested shapes. The side table pieces fit inside the coffee table pieces, which fit inside the shelf pieces, and so on. This gives him excellent material utilization, which keeps the prices reasonable. The small end table is only USD$260, which is really good for high quality, non-mass produced furniture made by the guy who designed it. The fit and finish looks excellent as well. I'm really looking forward to seeing more work from this guy.

And I wish more of us independent designers understood production and how to make things so that people might actually be able to afford them.

Tonfisk Warm Wood Cups

You don't see much wood in housewares these days, except for salad bowls. I love these cups and the matching tea set, from Finnish company Tonfisk. The veneer base gives them a soft touch and doesn't transfer as much heat as ceramic. Even better, the raised edge keeps the base of the cup off the table surface, so you don't need a coaster. The wood holder slides off so it doesn't go through the dishwasher (the traditional nemesis of wood housewares).

$50 for the pair, which isn't too bad. Several of our friends have almost got these as gifts.

From the always cool Composition.
