Product Announcement: Suspended Bed 2.0

The last of the parts arrived today for the reissue run of the suspended bed. This was actually the first piece of furniture I ever designed, way back in 1997. If you haven't seen it before, the mattress platform is held rigidly in place by tensioned stainless steel cables.

The first one I made back then was made from mild steel (didn't like the finish), then later a few were made in stainless (way too expensive). Both those versions used welded frames (made by racecar fabricators I worked with at the time), and the size made them nearly impossible to ship. Eventually I came on the rather obvious idea of making the whole thing out of aluminum, and bolting everything together with corner nodes. This trades some added assembly for much easier shipping. It also allows the use of different materials for the structure (like wood), with the same machined aluminum nodes.
These are availble now(ish)- I still need to get packaging worked out before I can ship any. If you're in the Denver area, I can deliver and assemble it. Finish is plain aluminum, but I'm going to try powdercoating one and anodizing one. Price is $2999, which I admit is not exactly cheap, but there are a lot of complicated, extremely well-made parts here. I worked hard to keep the price in line- the old stainless version cost me $3000 to make. I'm also working on putting together a small show with some other local designers in the next few months, with some portion of the proceeds going to charity. Stay tuned.
Sorry about the crappy pictures (and my messy office). These parts are straight from the machine, and haven't been cleaned or buffed yet. I'm putting together a proper photo shoot in the next couple weeks.
