Bernstrand Deep Mirror

Here's an exercise in simplicity. Design a mirror, but don't give it a frame or any kind of stand, leaving nothing but the glass itself. But- make the glass an inch thick, or about 10 times thicker than ordinary mirror glass. That's Thomas Bernstrand's "Deep" mirror. Nothing to it really, but it's nice.

El Pasillo Table

Interesting concrete top table from Argentina's El Pasillo. I'd love to know how they did that. I thought those were inclusions of some kind, but the description says "colored concrete details." Maybe the color is only on the surface? The base is steel. No word on pricing, but it's the shipping that would get you on this.

Space Manufacturers 33 Table

I really like the grooved top detail on this coffee table from NY's Space Manufacturers. I do wonder how much crap would accumulate in there though. But maybe your house is cleaner than mine. Still, I can't help thinking it would work better on a vertical surface like a door or drawer front. Priced at $1760, which isn't bad at all.

These guys have a lot of cool stuff, see some more after the jump.

Mod Quad Table

A nice idea from NY's Wonk. Storage space in coffee tables is always a good idea, and this is a novel implementation. I really like the slightly contrasting greys with the maple veneer too. My only (minor) complaint is that it's about 2" too tall. No price given.

Rioform Loop Chair

Single sheet of folded up polypropylene from Rioform. The shape acts like a spring. They don't give a weight limit, but they do say it works fine with a 120kg (265lb) person. Another one of those stunning, simple ideas that makes me feel stupid for not thinking of it myself. Designed by Brazilian Jorge Lopes, and a bargain at $475.

Rioform carries a lot of interesting work from other Brazilian designers.

Sixixis Curly Pendant

Sixixis is a UK shop that makes some crazy steam bent ash pieces. This Curly pendant is 25 feet of ash wrapped up around a frame. You're limited to low power bulbs (18w) for obvious reasons. About USD$175, which is not bad at all. Available from Hidden Art (UK & Europe only, sadly, but it would be fairly easy to modify this to accept a US lamp socket).

BDDW Lake Credenza

BDDW builds stuff that looks like it walked straight out of a 1955 Danish modern showroom, but better. I really like their Lake low credenza- walnut with a steel base and bronze legs. Simple and elegant. They've got a bunch of different finishes available, but this white and honey combo is best in show. No price given (yeah, you probably don't want to know anyway).

Pinch Twig Bench

Twig Bench : a rectangular prism formed from hazel branches. Made by England's Pinch Design. You see similar kinds of things every now and then, but I still think it looks interesting. And before you groan at the price (around USD$2000), keep in mind that you're looking at probably over 300 pounds of wood there. Your UPS guy will keep that in mind too.

(Sorry about the tiny pictures, but that's all they've got.)

Product Announcement: Suspended Bed 2.0

The last of the parts arrived today for the reissue run of the suspended bed. This was actually the first piece of furniture I ever designed, way back in 1997. If you haven't seen it before, the mattress platform is held rigidly in place by tensioned stainless steel cables.

The first one I made back then was made from mild steel (didn't like the finish), then later a few were made in stainless (way too expensive). Both those versions used welded frames (made by racecar fabricators I worked with at the time), and the size made them nearly impossible to ship. Eventually I came on the rather obvious idea of making the whole thing out of aluminum, and bolting everything together with corner nodes. This trades some added assembly for much easier shipping. It also allows the use of different materials for the structure (like wood), with the same machined aluminum nodes.

These are availble now(ish)- I still need to get packaging worked out before I can ship any. If you're in the Denver area, I can deliver and assemble it. Finish is plain aluminum, but I'm going to try powdercoating one and anodizing one. Price is $2999, which I admit is not exactly cheap, but there are a lot of complicated, extremely well-made parts here. I worked hard to keep the price in line- the old stainless version cost me $3000 to make. I'm also working on putting together a small show with some other local designers in the next few months, with some portion of the proceeds going to charity. Stay tuned.

Sorry about the crappy pictures (and my messy office). These parts are straight from the machine, and haven't been cleaned or buffed yet. I'm putting together a proper photo shoot in the next couple weeks.

Sugar Cube Light

Intensive worldwide research by Arteo in Munich has given us the first lamp with a shade made from sugar cubes. Why? Who cares, it's cool, and it gives off an interesting organic glow. The sugar is coated in plastic to keep it from dissolving or turning into caramel. Made in a Bavarian workshop for the handicapped. Only $153. If they make this in a 120V version, I'm getting one. trucdesign.com

Launched last month by Gilles Roudot, trucdesign.com is easily the best new design blog to come online since, oh about December 7th or so. Gilles is French, but he posts in English, much to my gratitude. If you had an enthusiastic French teacher in high school, you might remember that "truc" is a slangy word for a thing, like "gizmo" or "doodad." Or you might have to look it up like I did. Anyway, the gizmos on trucdesign are modern products and furniture, most of which you haven't seen blogged all over the web already. A bit like what we try to do here. Definitely worth adding to your feed reader.

Bonnie and Clyde Nesting Tables

Most nesting tables stack vertically- these stack horizontally. Possibly more clever than practical, but I still like it. Designed by Anna Thomas of Loyal Loot. No price or availability information given.

LAX Series Sliding Doors

Mash Studios is a custom design & build shop in Santa Monica. Their site only shows a couple of completed projects, but one of them is this LAX series of pieces. I think they way they did the sliding doors on this cabinet is interesting.
